Gilker James (Brent)
GILKER James "Brent" Arrived, July 19,1947 and Left in the company of Kate and dear friends at 11:53 September 12, 2009. Born in Vancouver (Kitsilano) and although always believed he was a Kits Boy, grew up in South Vancouver. He attended Vancouver College, Yakima State College where he had achieved a football scholarship, and King Edward Community College. Brent's great and lifelong affinity for the sea lead him to fishing, boom and tug boats and finally as a Skipper at Seaspan. A career he pursued for some 20 eventful years. Brent's greatest talent was for companionship; a loyal and courageous friend, a gifted and hilarious raconteur. He was a keen and competitive sportsman - to ski with him was to be in a magic place. He was a lifelong fan of good music and the performing arts. All of these he pursued and enjoyed best in the humorous company of others. Brent's life in Vancouver, Mexico, Whistler and South East Asia was shared with his wife and best friend Kate. They travelled in a way that was unusual for many but they received enduring memories, relationships and great laughs together. Brent is also survived by his daughter Christen, stepson Max (Stef) and grandchildren Cooper and Fisher, his sister Denise (Norm) and nephew Chad, nieces Rene? and Jordi. We would like to express our sincere thanks to the amazing staff at St. Paul's Palliative Care Unit who supported Kate and their friends to constantly be with Brent and to celebrate his life with him. He was never alone. Brent's family and friends will gather to remember him at The Vancouver Rowing Club, September 27th, 2009 at 2 o'clock. He talked to anyone, anywhere...
